Turnaround and myView

Turnaround

Youth Justice Services in England and Wales have been provided £55m Turnaround funding over three years, to develop early help practice and services to improve outcomes for children on the cusp of entering the youth justice system.

This additional funding will enable YJSs to focus on the needs of 17,000 young people not currently on their statutory caseload.

The overall aims of the Turnaround programme are to:

Achieve positive outcomes for children with the ultimate aim of preventing them going on to offend;

Ensure all children on the cusp of the youth justice system are consistently offered a needs assessment and the opportunity for support;

Improve the socio-emotional, mental health and wellbeing of children; and

Improve the integration and partnership working between YOTs and other statutory services to support children.

"Evaluating local programmes to build up a robust evidence base of what works" ...

As with all intiatives of this kind, there is a focus on how local YOSs evaluate the effect that their early help services have on young people's outcomes - both at an individual level and for all young people in the cohort. Relying on anecdotal evidence alone is not sufficient.

 Turnaround myView is an engaging and accessible app that enables local youth justice workers, managers and boards to use a library of speech enabled, graphically rich self assessment/ self reporting tools to:

Capture feedback from young people and their families during their involvement in Turnaround interventions, that informs their individual assessments and

Demonstrate, through graphical child's journey reporting, change and progress throughout early help intereventions and in the longer term.

As information is collected, managers will also be able to produce reports on outcome effectiveness of these interventions as well as support the development of new best practice for their YOS; and to their local Youth Justice boards.

Turnaround myView also includes optional functionality to reach out to young people including those hard to reach by:

Messaging young people to provide information, encourage and support their participation, and to remind or nudge them about appointments and other issues effecting them, and

Enabling young people to contact their worker or service directly.

How does Turnaround myView work?

myView for Turnaround:

Setting up and beginning to use myView as part of your local Turnaround programme is simple:

1.   All young people involved in Turnaround are registered to use the myView app in one process - this produces a unique logins and passwords for young people, their parents and carers.

2.   Then YOSs can install the myView app from  or  to their devices directly on tablets or smartphones - your service's or the young persons'.

3.   Young people will then be able to access the app - supported by their worker or volunteers or independently - at relevant stages of the intervention. This usually includes at the start, review and closure stages but can also be used to collect post-intervention feedback, enabling evaluation of longer term impact of early help services on outcomes.

4.   Young people with then have access to a range of purpose-built self assessment and programme evaluation questionnaires already included with the app - these can also be customised to suit local practice and priorities.

You can view four examples of these multimedia, interactive questionnaires by clicking here.

How's It Going? for young people, and for their parents/ carers to self report on their experience of their Turnaround programme and any related changes or achievements.

How R U Doing? referring to SDQ and strength-based practice, young people can self assess their wellbeing and how this changes over time.

PLS where young people can self assess their preferred learning styles.

5.   As each young person accesses their Turnaround questionnaires, their responses are saved live and are available to their worker for distanced travelled or child's journey reporting [see examples in Resources section below].  As 2,5,10 or 50 young people access their questionnaires, their responses are available for managers to generate a range of service evaluation reports using built-in myView reporting functionality.
